Functional Behaviour assessments
A Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) is a structured process used to identify the underlying causes or functions of challenging behaviours. It involves gathering and analysing data about the antecedents (what happens before), behaviours (what the person does), and consequences (what happens after) to determine why a behaviour is occurring. The goal of an FBA is to inform the development of effective, individualised interventions that promote positive behaviours and reduce or eliminate the need for restrictive practices, in alignment with human rights and person-centred principles.

This type of assessment assists to formulate PBS plans.

An interim behaviour support plan is a short-term plan used when a restrictive practice is in place, but a full plan isn’t yet available. It outlines immediate safety strategies and ensures the practice is authorised and monitored. It must be done within 1-month and replaced with a comprehensive plan within 6-months.
A comprehensive behaviour support plan is a detailed, person-centred plan based on a functional behaviour assessment. It includes proactive strategies, skill-building supports, and clear steps to reduce and eliminate restrictive practices.
In addition to the plans comprehensive and ongoing support for the person, providers and family is given to ensure ongoing success, so adjustments can be made and monitored.
Restrictive practices are actions or interventions that limit a person’s rights or freedom of movement. In the NDIS context, they include seclusion, chemical restraint, mechanical restraint, physical restraint, and environmental restraint. These practices are only permitted when necessary to prevent harm and must be authorised, monitored, and gradually reduced.

Restrictive practices must be authorised by the state / territory in which the person resides and reported to the NDIS.
